If baking soda is used for extreme heartburn, can it cause stomach damage if too much is ingested?

like the elementary school vinegar and Baking Soda Volcano experiments we all did….

I doubt whether there is enough gastric secretion to cause an explosion of carbon dioxide. Interestingly when the pH of the stomach falls to low secretin is released causing the pancreas to release bicarbonate (presumably protecting duodenal mucosa)
